The Indian Navy is set to commission its indigenously built stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri on 11 July 2026 at Mumbai. The warship, part of Project 17A, represents a significant step in India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Equipped with advanced stealth features, modern weapon systems, and sensors, Mahendragiri will bolster the Navy’s combat capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.
INS Mahendragiri is the seventh ship of the Project 17A class, designed by the Directorate of Naval Design and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). The frigate incorporates cutting-edge technologies including improved stealth, enhanced survivability, and state-of-the-art propulsion systems. It is capable of undertaking multi-role missions such as anti-submarine warfare, anti-air warfare, and surface warfare.
The commissioning ceremony will mark a milestone in India’s indigenous shipbuilding journey, showcasing the Navy’s growing strength and the country’s ability to produce world-class warships. The addition of Mahendragiri is expected to significantly enhance India’s maritime security and operational readiness in safeguarding national interests.
