Indian Railways has approved an investment of ₹993 crore for the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening the Chennai Suburban rail network. The sanction was announced on May 19, 2026, as part of the government’s broader push to modernize urban transport systems.
The project involves doubling the 69-km stretch between Arakkonam and Chengalpattu, which serves as a critical corridor for suburban commuters and long-distance passengers. The doubling will ease congestion, improve punctuality, and enhance capacity for both passenger and freight trains.
Officials stated that the project will include modern signaling systems, upgraded tracks, and improved station facilities to ensure smoother operations. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce travel time and provide relief to lakhs of daily commuters in the Chennai metropolitan region.
The doubling project is part of Indian Railways’ larger vision to expand suburban connectivity and support economic growth in Tamil Nadu. It will also complement ongoing projects such as the Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu quadrupling and electrification works across the Southern Railway zone.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the investment reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing passenger convenience and building world-class infrastructure. He noted that the project will strengthen Chennai’s role as a key hub for trade, industry, and mobility in South India.
Local representatives and commuter associations have welcomed the move, highlighting that the doubling will address long-standing issues of overcrowding and delays in the suburban network. The project is expected to be completed within four years, with phased commissioning to begin earlier.
