The Jammu and Kashmir government has approved an 18 percent hike in fares for commercial passenger vehicles across the Union Territory. The decision comes in response to rising fuel costs and demands from transport associations for fare revision.
According to the official order, the revised fares will apply to buses, minibuses, taxis, and other passenger vehicles operating in both urban and rural areas. The Transport Department emphasized that the hike is aimed at balancing the interests of operators while ensuring affordability for commuters.
Officials noted that the fare revision was finalized after consultations with stakeholders, including transport unions and district authorities. The new rates will be implemented with immediate effect, and enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure compliance.
The government clarified that while the hike addresses operational challenges faced by transporters, strict monitoring will be carried out to prevent overcharging and exploitation of passengers. Any violation of the notified fares will invite penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The fare hike is expected to impact daily commuters, students, and office-goers, but authorities assured that the increase was kept moderate to minimize the burden on the public while sustaining the viability of passenger transport services.
