India is observing National Mathematics Day today, December 22, 2025, to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The day was formally instituted by the Government of India in 2011, when then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh declared December 22 as National Mathematics Day during Ramanujan’s 125th birth anniversary celebrations.
Across the country, educational institutions, universities, and research bodies are organizing seminars, workshops, and competitions to highlight the importance of mathematics in scientific progress and everyday life. The observance aims to inspire students to pursue higher studies and research in mathematics, while also paying tribute to Ramanujan’s extraordinary contributions to number theory, infinite series, and partition functions.
