Srinagar, November 2, 2025 — The second edition of the Kashmir Marathon saw over 1,500 athletes from 27 Indian states and 11 countries gather in Srinagar for a celebration of endurance, unity, and scenic beauty. Kenyan runner Dennis Kipayano claimed victory in the full marathon category.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty flagged off the event at dawn from Polo View Market. The Chief Minister, who completed the half marathon, described the event as a reflection of Kashmir’s resilience and optimism. “The spirit of Kashmir is stronger than fear,” he said, adding that the Valley is open, peaceful, and welcoming to all.
Later, Omar Abdullah shared his experience on social media, noting personal progress and congratulating all participants. The marathon, organized by the Department of Tourism and the J&K Sports Council, featured two categories: a 42 km full marathon and a 21 km half marathon. The total prize purse was ₹25 lakh.
The route offered runners a breathtaking experience, winding past Dal Lake, Mughal gardens, and chinar-lined boulevards, reaching the foothills of the Zabarwan Range with an elevation gain of nearly 960 meters. Officials noted the track’s mix of flat and moderately challenging terrain.
Suniel Shetty, who cheered runners throughout the event, praised the energy and scale of participation. “With nearly 100 international runners here, it’s clear that Kashmir is ready for the world,” he said. He also encouraged visitors to explore the region for tourism, trade, and filmmaking.
Shetty, who arrived a day earlier, enjoyed a shikara ride on Dal Lake and expressed admiration for the region’s winter charm. He emphasized the safety and hospitality of Kashmir, saying he had freely explored the area without concern.
Participants were deeply moved by the landscape and atmosphere. A runner from Germany described the route as “running through a postcard,” while a first-time participant from Bengaluru said Kashmir felt like “running in heaven.” A local athlete shared that running alongside international participants made them feel connected to the world.
Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Satish Sharma called the marathon a celebration of peace and brotherhood, thanking all contributors for making the event a success and highlighting its message of unity and prosperity.
