NEW DELHI, Nov 27: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over the worsening air pollution in the national capital, saying the government has failed to take meaningful action despite the severe health hazard faced by millions.
Gandhi said that Delhi’s toxic air has reached “public health emergency” levels and accused the Centre of ignoring scientific warnings and expert recommendations. He alleged that instead of addressing the crisis, the government continues to indulge in political blame games while citizens, especially children and the elderly, suffer the consequences.
“The air in Delhi has become poisonous, but the Prime Minister chooses to remain silent. People are forced to breathe toxic air every single day. What is the government waiting for?” Gandhi said in a statement shared on social media.
He said the government must immediately coordinate with state authorities, deploy emergency mitigation measures, and invest in long-term solutions such as crop-residue management, clean energy transition, and stricter industrial emissions control.
Senior Congress leaders echoed his remarks, calling for a comprehensive national clean-air strategy and accountability mechanisms to ensure faster implementation of policies under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
Meanwhile, air quality monitors across the capital continued to record pollution levels in the ‘severe’ category for a fourth consecutive day, prompting health advisories from medical experts.
