Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage made history at the Rome Diamond League 2026, becoming the fourth Asian athlete to break the 90m barrier in javelin with a throw of 92.62m.
His performance set a new Sri Lankan national record, broke the meet record, and marked the world’s leading throw of the season, placing him second on Asia’s all-time list behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem.
Tharanga, just 23 years old, has now joined the elite group of Asian javelin throwers including Neeraj Chopra of India, Cheng Chao-Tsun of Chinese Taipei, and Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, all of whom have crossed the 90m mark.
The achievement is a milestone for Sri Lankan athletics, with Tharanga becoming the nation’s first-ever athlete to cross the 90m threshold in javelin.
His consistency throughout the season, with multiple throws over 89m, highlights his rising dominance and positions him as a strong contender for upcoming global competitions.
India’s Sachin Yadav also competed in Rome, finishing eighth on debut with a throw of 79.18m, while Tharanga’s record-setting performance drew international acclaim.
Analysts note that this breakthrough underscores Asia’s growing strength in javelin, with Tharanga’s feat energizing Sri Lanka’s athletics community and inspiring future generations.
