The Supreme Court has strongly condemned the practice of dowry, observing that it reduces the institution of marriage to a mere commercial transaction. The Court noted that the evil of dowry undermines the sanctity of marriage and perpetuates exploitation, turning what should be a sacred union into a financial arrangement.
Delivering its remarks in a case related to dowry harassment, the apex court emphasized that marriage must be based on mutual respect, trust, and equality, not on monetary or material considerations. It warned that the persistence of dowry practices continues to erode social values and contributes to injustice against women.
The Court reiterated that dowry is a punishable offence under Indian law and urged strict enforcement of existing legal provisions to curb the menace. It further highlighted the need for collective societal efforts to eliminate dowry, stressing that awareness and education are key to changing mindsets.
