Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, inaugurated the Shore-Based Laboratory of the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO) in Visakhapatnam. The facility is expected to strengthen India’s ocean research capabilities and support scientific studies in marine ecosystems, coastal processes, and ocean resources.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to advancing ocean science and technology as part of India’s Blue Economy vision. He emphasized that the new laboratory will provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for researchers to conduct experiments, analyze samples, and develop innovative solutions for sustainable ocean resource management.
The CSIR-NIO Shore-Based Laboratory is designed to facilitate multidisciplinary research, including marine biodiversity, ocean chemistry, and coastal engineering. It will also serve as a hub for training young scientists and fostering collaboration with academic institutions and industry partners.
Officials noted that the laboratory will play a crucial role in supporting national initiatives such as deep-sea exploration, climate change studies, and disaster preparedness related to coastal and marine environments. The facility is expected to contribute significantly to India’s efforts in harnessing ocean resources responsibly while protecting marine ecosystems.
The inauguration of the Shore-Based Laboratory in Visakhapatnam marks a major step in expanding India’s ocean research infrastructure, reinforcing the country’s position as a leader in marine science and technology.
