Prime Minister Narendra Modi today saluted the armed forces on the occasion of Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s historic victory in the 1971 war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh. He paid homage to the courage and sacrifice of soldiers, stating that their heroism continues to inspire generations of Indians.
Vijay Diwas is observed annually on December 16 to honour the valour of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force who fought with distinction during the 13-day war against Pakistan. The decisive victory resulted in the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani troops and the creation of Bangladesh as an independent nation.
In his message, Prime Minister Modi remembered the brave soldiers whose steadfast resolve and selfless service protected the nation and secured a moment of pride in history. He emphasised that the armed forces embody the highest traditions of duty and sacrifice.
President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute to the armed forces, highlighting India’s commitment to indigenisation and preparedness for future challenges. She noted that the victory of 1971 remains a shining example of India’s military strength and national unity.
The Congress Party marked the day by recalling the leadership of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, under whose guidance India achieved the decisive victory. Party leaders stated that her role in the war remains a defining chapter in India’s history.
Across the country, commemorative events were held to honour the martyrs and veterans of the 1971 war. Wreath-laying ceremonies, parades, and memorial services took place at war memorials, with citizens joining in to express gratitude to the armed forces.
Vijay Diwas serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation’s security and sovereignty, while reinforcing the importance of unity and resilience in safeguarding India’s future.
