Both Houses of Parliament — the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha — are set to begin a detailed discussion on the Union Budget 2026-27 on Monday. The budget was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, marking the start of parliamentary scrutiny of the government’s fiscal and policy proposals for the coming financial year.
The Houses are scheduled to meet at 11 am. However, proceedings in the Lok Sabha witnessed brief disruptions amid protests by Opposition members, leading to a temporary adjournment. The debate is expected to continue over the coming days, with members from across parties participating in the general discussion.
While the ruling alliance has defended the budget as growth-oriented and inclusive, Opposition parties have raised concerns over issues such as unemployment, inflation, social sector spending and allocations for farmers and marginalised sections. Leaders of the INDIA bloc have indicated that they will use the debate to highlight what they describe as gaps in the budget’s priorities.
The Opposition is also likely to press for a wider discussion on policy matters linked to the budget, including the government’s approach to international trade and economic reforms. Coordination meetings have been held by Opposition parties to ensure a united stand during the debate in both Houses.
The Budget Session of Parliament, which began in late January, will continue in two phases with a recess in between. The discussions on the Union Budget 2026-27 are a crucial part of the session, as they set the tone for subsequent demands for grants and the passage of key financial legislation.
