India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission has been honoured with the prestigious 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
The award recognizes Chandrayaan-3’s historic achievement of becoming the first mission to successfully land near the Moon’s south pole in August 2023, a milestone that expanded scientific understanding of lunar geology and resources.
The honour was presented during the ASCEND 2026 conference in Washington DC, where India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, accepted the award on behalf of ISRO.
AIAA highlighted Chandrayaan-3’s contributions to advancing global space exploration, including its confirmation of key chemical elements in lunar soil and its role in paving the way for future human missions.
The recognition also underscores India’s growing role in international space research and its expanding commercial space ecosystem, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Space Vision 2047.
ISRO officials noted that the award reflects the dedication of Indian scientists and engineers, and strengthens India’s position as a leading player in deep space exploration.
