New Delhi, August 25: The Government of India has lifted restrictions on the export of wheat and wheat-based products with immediate effect, opening the way for unrestricted overseas shipments.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has revised the export policy for wheat and specified wheat products from “Prohibited” to “Free”.
The decision covers wheat, durum wheat, wheat flour, maida, semolina, wholemeal atta and resultant atta. Exporters can now ship these products without the earlier restrictions.
India had imposed restrictions on wheat exports in 2022 amid concerns over domestic availability and rising prices. The government had subsequently eased the restrictions in phases by allowing limited quantities of wheat and wheat products for export.
The latest decision comes amid improved domestic wheat availability and strong production prospects. Government wheat stocks have also increased significantly, providing greater room for exports while maintaining domestic supplies.
The removal of restrictions is expected to provide greater opportunities for Indian farmers, millers, processors and exporters to access international markets. It could also increase the availability of Indian wheat and wheat products in overseas markets.
The government’s move marks a significant shift in India’s wheat export policy and restores greater flexibility for the domestic wheat industry to participate in global trade.
