Srinagar, November 21 — Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take up the issue of safety and security of Kashmiris living outside the Union Territory with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mehbooba expressed concern over reports of harassment and intimidation faced by Kashmiri students and professionals in different parts of the country. She emphasised that the matter requires urgent intervention at the highest level to ensure their protection and dignity.
In her statement, Mehbooba said that Kashmiris, irrespective of where they reside, deserve equal rights and security as citizens of India. She appealed to Omar Abdullah to highlight the issue directly with the Prime Minister, stressing that such steps would reassure families in the Valley and strengthen national unity.
The appeal comes amid growing calls from political and civil society groups for stronger safeguards for Kashmiris studying and working outside the region. Leaders have reiterated that ensuring their safety is essential for fostering trust and inclusivity.
Officials noted that the matter is expected to be discussed further in upcoming engagements, with emphasis on creating mechanisms to prevent harassment and guarantee equal treatment for Kashmiri citizens across the country.
