New Delhi, May 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that eradicating illegal immigration is vital to safeguard India’s demographic balance, sovereignty, and national security. He warned that infiltration leads to “unnatural demographic changes” which threaten law and order, tribal societies, and the nation’s identity.
Shah announced the formation of a high-level committee under Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar (Retd.) to study demographic changes caused by illegal migration. The panel includes senior experts such as Census Commissioner, Durga Shankar Mishra (Retd. IAS), Balaji Srivastava (Retd. IPS), and Dr. Shamika Ravi, and will submit its report within a year.
The Home Minister indicated that the committee may recommend new legislation to counter “artificial demographic shifts” and ensure protection of indigenous communities. He reiterated that every infiltrator will be expelled from the country.
Highlighting border security, Shah said the government is working on a “Smart Border” project equipped with drones, radars, and cameras to make the Indo-Bangladesh and Indo-Pakistan frontiers “impregnable.”
In his remarks, Shah criticized the West Bengal government for failing to curb infiltration, claiming that BJP’s growing presence in the state has shifted the situation. He emphasized that protecting demographic integrity is central to national security and sovereignty.
The statement comes amid heightened political debate over illegal immigration, with the Centre framing it as a demographic and security challenge requiring urgent action.
