New Delhi, Dec 02: Enrolments under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) have crossed 8.34 crore, with women making up 48 percent of the total subscribers, officials said on Tuesday. The milestone highlights the growing appeal of the government-backed pension scheme, particularly among women and workers in the informal sector.
The Atal Pension Yojana, launched in 2015, provides a fixed monthly pension to workers in the unorganised sector upon reaching the age of 60, ensuring financial security in their later years. Subscribers contribute small, regular amounts, which are managed by financial institutions in partnership with the government.
Government officials noted that the nearly equal participation of women reflects increased awareness and financial inclusion among female workers. Extensive outreach campaigns, including digital platforms, banks, and community-level programs, have played a key role in promoting the scheme nationwide.
The government emphasised that the scheme’s success lies in its accessibility, flexibility, and the focus on empowering citizens to secure their post-retirement life. Authorities urged eligible individuals, especially women, to enrol and take advantage of the benefits offered by the program.
With over 8.34 crore subscribers and counting, the Atal Pension Yojana continues to strengthen India’s efforts to enhance social security and financial protection for workers across the country’s informal and unorganised sectors.
