New Delhi, November 1, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had intended to fully integrate Jammu and Kashmir with India, but was prevented from doing so by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Speaking at an event commemorating Patel’s birth anniversary, Modi emphasized Patel’s role in unifying India and suggested that had Patel been allowed to handle the Kashmir issue, the region’s trajectory might have been different.
“Sardar Patel wanted to merge the entire Jammu and Kashmir with India, but Nehru did not allow him,” Modi said, adding that Patel’s vision and decisiveness were instrumental in shaping modern India.
The remarks have sparked renewed debate over historical decisions related to Kashmir’s accession and the political dynamics of post-independence India.
