AAP MP Raghav Chadha has urged telecom companies to allow consumers to carry forward unused mobile data into the next billing cycle, arguing that paid data should not expire daily. He also suggested enabling data transfers among family and friends, making mobile data usage more consumer-friendly.
Highlighting the issue in the Rajya Sabha, Chadha pointed out that recharge plans with daily limits (1.5GB, 2GB, 3GB) reset every 24 hours, and unused data expires without rollover. He stressed that customers pay for the full data quota, so expiry without usage is unfair.
Chadha proposed three solutions: data rollover into the next cycle, the ability to share unused data with family or friends, and compensation or adjustment for underused data. He argued these reforms would ensure fairer billing and better consumer protection.
While consumers stand to benefit from reduced wastage and more flexibility, telecom firms may resist due to potential revenue loss and technical challenges in implementing new billing systems. Regulatory intervention from TRAI or the government may be necessary to push such reforms forward.
