Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on July 8, 2026, to review the impact of heavy rainfall and flash floods, assuring full central assistance for relief and restoration efforts.
The Chenab Valley, Doda, and Kishtwar districts were among the worst affected, with highways blocked and infrastructure damaged. Flash floods blocked National Highway 244 at Premnagar (Doda), leaving vehicles stranded and halting traffic.
The 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Power Project in Kishtwar suffered extensive damage as floodwaters swept through its infrastructure. The annual Machail Yatra pilgrimage was disrupted, with authorities advising pilgrims to avoid flood-hit routes until conditions improve.
Three gates of the Baglihar Dam in Ramban were opened to manage rising water levels in the Chenab River. Rescue and clearance operations are ongoing, with highway managers deploying excavators and JCBs to restore connectivity.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed Shah’s assurance, stating: “If we need help from the central government in the future, they are ready to provide assistance.” He highlighted difficulties in Chenab Valley and Kathua, noting that the Centre’s support would be crucial for relief and rehabilitation.
Heavy rainfall continues, with authorities on high alert. Public safety measures are being enforced, including advisories against travel through flood-hit stretches. Restoration work is underway in Doda and Kishtwar, with priority on reopening highways and securing power infrastructure.
