JAMMU: The Chief Minister has clarified that Jammu and Kashmir will not hand over its mines to the Centre, asserting that the Union Territory retains full authority over its mineral resources. The statement comes amid speculation regarding central control over newly identified deposits, including limestone and lithium reserves.
The CM emphasised that while the Union Territory will continue to collaborate with central agencies for technical expertise and exploration support, the ownership and management of mines will remain with the J&K administration. He underlined that this approach ensures that the benefits of mineral exploitation directly contribute to the local economy and employment generation.
Highlighting recent initiatives such as the e-auction of limestone blocks and ongoing lithium exploration in Reasi, the CM noted that these projects are being implemented under the supervision of the UT government. He reiterated that transparency, sustainability, and community participation are guiding principles in the management of mineral resources.
The statement is seen as a reaffirmation of the UT’s commitment to safeguarding its economic interests while balancing industrial growth with environmental responsibility. The CM assured that all future mining projects will be pursued in a manner that maximises local benefits and strengthens Jammu and Kashmir’s resource-based industries.
