Srinagar, Nov 18: The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) today detained a doctor and his wife during coordinated search operations across Srinagar, Kulgam, and Anantnag districts. The action was taken as part of an ongoing investigation into unlawful activities and suspected online radicalisation.
Officials identified the accused as Dr. Umer Farooq Bhat, presently working at the Super Speciality Hospital of SMHS Srinagar, and his wife Shahzada Akhtar. The couple, originally from Bugam in Kulgam and currently residing at Sheeren Bagh, Srinagar, was taken into custody after incriminating material was recovered during the raids.
CIK teams searched four locations, including residential premises and hospital facilities, seizing multiple digital devices and documents. The recoveries included five mobile phones, five SIM cards, a tablet device, and other material directly relevant to the investigation. Authorities stated that the evidence points to activities in violation of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
According to police sources, the searches were part of a larger crackdown against individuals misusing social media platforms in connivance with handlers across the border. Investigators believe that such networks have been deliberately engaged in furthering terrorist, secessionist, and separatist agendas in the Valley.
Officials confirmed that the detained couple is being questioned to trace their links and identify other individuals involved in the network. The seized material will undergo forensic examination to establish the extent of their activities and connections.
Concluding the operation, the CIK reiterated its commitment to act firmly against those indulging in unlawful activities and assured that further action will follow based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
