The newly launched CMS-03 communication satellite will provide enhanced telecommunication coverage across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), strengthening the Indian Navy’s space-based communications and maritime domain awareness, officials said on Sunday.
Weighing 4,410 kg, the indigenously designed satellite will offer high-capacity bandwidth for seamless and secure communication links between ships, aircraft, submarines, and Maritime Operations Centres of the Navy.
Launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, CMS-03 is a multi-band communication satellite that also provides coverage over the Indian landmass.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the launch as a “major milestone” highlighting India’s spirit of #Aatmanirbharta and technological innovation. In a post on X, he congratulated ISRO for its cutting-edge achievement.
A Navy spokesperson said CMS-03’s payload includes transponders capable of supporting voice, data, and video communications across multiple bands, enhancing the Navy’s operational readiness in the strategically important IOR.
The satellite, India’s heaviest communication satellite to date, incorporates advanced indigenous components tailored to meet the operational requirements of the Indian Navy, officials added.
