The Government of India has intensified its push to embed Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills across education, vocational training, and the workforce as part of the Viksit Bharat vision. The initiative is led by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship under Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary, with active collaboration from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and industry partners.
Central to this effort is the IndiaAI Mission’s FutureSkills pillar, which integrates AI capabilities into national skilling systems. Flagship programs such as SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness), PMKVY 4.0, TechSaksham 2.0, and the Directorate General of Training’s collaboration with Microsoft are designed to prepare learners for AI-driven roles and strengthen industry partnerships.
Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary has emphasized the importance of aligning policy, industry, academia, and training institutions to meet real-world demand. The Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, has partnered with Microsoft to deliver AI skilling modules, while TechSaksham 2.0—jointly driven by Microsoft and SAP—focuses on promoting AI careers for women.
The government emphasizes inclusivity, with targeted outreach to diverse communities and sectoral applications. These initiatives aim to develop talent across the AI value chain, from research and engineering to applications in healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance.
By embedding AI skills into education and workforce pipelines, the government seeks to ensure India’s competitiveness in the global AI economy. Continuous upskilling and reskilling are positioned as essential for workforce adaptability, while ethical AI practices and inter-ministerial coordination between MSDE, MeitY, and industry partners remain critical to successful implementation.
This AI skilling drive forms part of the broader Viksit Bharat momentum, aligning flagship schemes with technology-driven growth to create a future-ready and inclusive workforce.
