New Delhi, Jun 23: India has recorded more than five lakh organ donation pledges, marking a landmark achievement in the country’s healthcare journey and reflecting growing awareness and commitment among citizens.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said the milestone underscores the increasing recognition of organ donation as a profound act of humanity that offers hope and a second chance at life to thousands of patients awaiting transplantation.
Officials highlighted that the achievement is the result of sustained government efforts to promote voluntary organ and tissue donation, foster a culture of informed participation, and strengthen social responsibility.
Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), expressed gratitude to citizens across the country for their overwhelming support. He commended the role of state governments, union territory administrations, healthcare professionals, NGOs, educational institutions, and media organizations in mobilizing public awareness.
The government noted that the Aadhaar-based organ donation pledge portal has made registration simpler, transparent, and more accessible, enabling citizens nationwide to securely pledge their organs and tissues.
Officials added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s consistent appeals in his Mann Ki Baat addresses have given significant impetus to the movement, transforming organ donation into a national cause.
As demand for organs continues to outpace availability, the growing number of pledges is seen as a crucial step toward strengthening India’s transplant ecosystem and ensuring ethical, transparent, and patient-centric practices.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continue awareness campaigns, enhance institutional capacities, and ensure that the generosity of donors translates into life-saving transplants for those in need.
