Da Nang, May 25: Indian wrestlers delivered a strong performance at the Asian Under-23 Wrestling Championships, securing two gold medals and adding to the country’s growing tally at the continental event.
In women’s freestyle, Mansi Lather dominated the 68kg category, defeating Uzbekistan’s Firuza Esenbaeva with a commanding 14-1 victory to clinch gold. Kajal followed with another top finish in the 76kg category, blanking Kyrgyzstan’s Aizharkyn Zhanybekova 10-0 to secure India’s second gold medal of the day.
India’s young contingent also picked up silver and bronze medals across different weight categories, showcasing depth and promise for the future. Sweety claimed silver in the 50kg women’s freestyle, while Neha Sangwan and Amruta Shashikant Pujari added silvers in their respective divisions. Bronze medals came through Ahilya S. Shinde, Neeraj Patel, and Rohit Bura.
Officials noted that India’s medal tally reflects the rising strength of its wrestling program, with both men and women contributing to the success. The championships have highlighted India’s potential to challenge traditional wrestling powerhouses in Asia.
With nine golds, three silvers, and three bronzes overall, India’s Under-23 wrestlers have made a significant mark, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation in the sport.
