Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief has criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his remarks in the ongoing Vande Mataram controversy, accusing him of making statements that could create unnecessary tension around the issue.
The exchange comes amid a political disagreement over the rendition of Vande Mataram at official functions. Omar Abdullah had said that his party had never adopted the national song as a party position, while also maintaining that the government must comply with the applicable legal and official requirements.
Reacting to the Chief Minister’s remarks, the J&K Congress chief questioned the approach taken by the National Conference leadership and objected to the suggestion that people could face legal action over the issue.
The Congress leader said that differences over Vande Mataram should not be allowed to turn into a confrontation involving ordinary citizens. He stressed that political and constitutional matters should be handled through dialogue and democratic means.
The remarks have added another layer to the ongoing debate between the Congress and National Conference, which are allies in Jammu and Kashmir but have occasionally differed on sensitive political and administrative issues.
The controversy gained momentum after the rendition of the national song at an official event, prompting differing reactions from political leaders. While the government has maintained that it is required to follow the applicable protocol, Congress leaders have raised questions about the manner in which the matter is being handled.
Both parties have continued to maintain their respective positions, with the issue now becoming a subject of wider political discussion in Jammu and Kashmir.
