Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has said that delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir is inevitable but stressed that the process must be conducted fairly and transparently. Speaking at a public gathering, she emphasized that any exercise in redrawing constituencies should uphold democratic principles and ensure justice for all communities.
Mufti cautioned that delimitation should not be used as a political tool to alter representation unfairly. She urged the Election Commission and authorities to carry out the process in a manner that strengthens democracy and builds trust among the people of the region.
The statement comes amid ongoing discussions on electoral reforms and constituency restructuring in Jammu and Kashmir. Political parties and civil society groups have been voicing concerns about fairness, representation, and the impact of delimitation on the region’s political landscape.
Mufti reiterated that transparency and equity are essential for the exercise to be accepted by the people, adding that only a fair delimitation process can ensure stability and strengthen democratic institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
