Jammu, Nov 26: Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has urged authorities to grant minority status to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), stating that such recognition would strengthen the institution and benefit students from diverse backgrounds.
Speaking at a public interaction, Omar Abdullah said minority status would enable the institute to access special provisions, including scholarships, infrastructure support, and academic opportunities. He emphasised that the move would help SMVDIME expand its reach and contribute more effectively to healthcare education in the region.
The former Chief Minister highlighted that institutions with minority status often play a vital role in promoting inclusivity and ensuring representation of underprivileged sections. He appealed to the government to consider the demand positively, keeping in view the larger interest of students and the community.
Omar Abdullah reiterated that strengthening medical education and healthcare facilities is essential for Jammu and Kashmir’s development. He added that granting minority status to SMVDIME would be a step towards empowering the institute to serve society with greater efficiency and inclusiveness.
