The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Centre and other concerned authorities on a plea challenging the reduction of the qualifying cut-off for NEET-PG admissions for the 2025–26 academic session. The apex court issued notices to the Union government, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), the National Medical Commission (NMC) and other stakeholders, asking them to file their replies.
The plea has questioned the decision to substantially lower the qualifying percentile for NEET-PG, arguing that such a move could compromise the standards of postgraduate medical education and affect the quality of future healthcare professionals. The petitioners contended that the relaxation in cut-off was arbitrary and lacked adequate justification.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court observed that the issue raised important concerns related to merit, transparency and academic standards in medical admissions. The bench said it would examine whether the reduction in the qualifying cut-off was in accordance with existing rules and regulations.
The matter has been posted for further hearing after responses are received from the concerned authorities. The court’s decision is expected to have a significant impact on NEET-PG admissions for the upcoming academic year.
