IMD predicts dense fog over Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and other regions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dense to very dense fog conditions over Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha during the night and morning hours over the next few days. The advisory comes amid a prolonged cold wave affecting large parts of north India.
Officials said visibility is likely to remain severely restricted in several areas, impacting road, rail and air traffic. Travellers have been advised to exercise caution, while authorities are preparing for possible delays and disruptions in transport services.
According to IMD, minimum temperatures are expected to stay below normal in many parts of north India, intensifying cold day conditions. Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are likely to witness cold wave spells, while isolated pockets in Uttar Pradesh may also experience similar conditions.
The department further indicated that the absence of significant precipitation has contributed to the persistence of fog and cold weather. However, chances of light rainfall in Delhi and adjoining areas later this week may bring some relief.
Residents have been urged to take precautions against health risks associated with prolonged exposure to cold and fog, while farmers have been advised to monitor crop conditions closely as dense fog can affect growth and irrigation cycles.
The IMD said the current spell of dense fog is expected to continue until January 6, with gradual improvement thereafter.
