The meeting was convened following renewed disputes over sanctions, oil exports, and political legitimacy in Caracas.
Representatives from Russia, China, and non-aligned countries emphasized that unilateral measures and confrontational rhetoric risk destabilizing the wider region. They urged Washington and Caracas to engage in constructive dialogue under UN auspices, stressing that diplomacy remains the only viable path to resolving differences.
European members of the Council echoed the call for restraint, highlighting the humanitarian impact of sanctions and political deadlock on the Venezuelan population. They pressed both sides to prioritize the welfare of civilians and avoid actions that could worsen the crisis.
The United States defended its position, arguing that sanctions are necessary to pressure the Venezuelan government to restore democratic institutions. Venezuela, in turn, accused Washington of interference and demanded respect for its sovereignty.
UN officials warned that the standoff could undermine regional stability if left unresolved. They reiterated the importance of multilateral engagement and reaffirmed the Council’s role in facilitating dialogue between the parties.
