New Delhi, December 25, 2025: The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), launched on December 25, 2000 by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has completed 25 years of transforming rural connectivity across India. The scheme has provided all-weather road access to thousands of villages, significantly improving mobility and economic opportunities in rural areas.
Over the past 25 years, PMGSY has sanctioned more than 8.25 lakh kilometers of rural roads, with nearly 7.88 lakh kilometers completed, achieving close to 95 percent physical progress. The program has connected thousands of habitations, enabling better access to schools, hospitals, and markets.
Marking the milestone, the government announced plans under PMGSY-IV (2024–29) to construct 62,500 kilometers of additional rural roads with an outlay of Rs. 70,125 crore. The initiative aims to connect over 25,000 habitations, further strengthening rural infrastructure and economic integration.
Budgetary support of Rs. 19,000 crore has been allocated for FY 2025–26, ensuring continued momentum. Monitoring systems such as OMMAS, e-MARG, GPS-based tracking, and a three-tier quality framework have been deployed to ensure transparency and accountability in implementation.
PMGSY has played a pivotal role in reducing poverty, boosting agricultural incomes, improving access to education and healthcare, and creating local employment opportunities. The program is widely recognized as one of India’s most impactful rural development initiatives.
