India plans to induct 62 new vessels in the current financial year as part of its push to strengthen the shipping sector under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing domestic capacity and reducing reliance on foreign fleets.
According to officials, the new vessels will include cargo ships, coastal carriers, and specialized vessels to support both domestic and international trade routes. The expansion is expected to improve logistics efficiency, lower freight costs, and provide resilience against global supply chain disruptions.
The ministry emphasized that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of self-reliance, ensuring that Indian shipping companies can handle a larger share of the country’s growing trade volumes. The plan also supports employment generation in shipbuilding, port operations, and allied industries.
By adding 62 vessels, India aims to strengthen its maritime infrastructure, reduce dependence on foreign shipping lines, and position itself as a more robust player in global trade. The expansion is expected to contribute significantly to the government’s target of achieving $2 trillion in exports by 2030–31.
