Jammu and Kashmir’s famed cherry produce will now reach Mumbai in a record 33 hours, thanks to a special Indian Railways parcel service launched to boost agricultural logistics and farmer incomes. The initiative marks a significant step in connecting Kashmir’s horticultural produce with major urban markets.
The first consignment of cherries was dispatched from Jammu and Kashmir and successfully delivered to Mumbai within 33 hours, setting a new benchmark in perishable goods transport. Officials highlighted that the service ensures freshness and reduces spoilage, thereby increasing profitability for growers.
Railway authorities confirmed that the dedicated parcel train has been equipped with modern facilities to handle perishable cargo efficiently. The service is expected to benefit thousands of cherry farmers in the Valley, who often face challenges in transporting their produce quickly to distant markets.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised the initiative, noting that it aligns with the government’s vision of leveraging railways to support farmers and strengthen the agricultural supply chain. He emphasized that similar services will be expanded to cover other fruits and vegetables from Jammu and Kashmir.
Local growers welcomed the move, stating that faster delivery to Mumbai will open up new opportunities for sales and exports, while ensuring that consumers receive fresher produce. The service is also expected to enhance the competitiveness of J&K’s horticultural sector in national and international markets.
