Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended his 26-day hunger strike after receiving assurances from the government, while the Climate Justice Party (CJP) has decided to continue its protest over its ongoing demands.
Wangchuk, who had been on a prolonged fast to highlight issues concerning Ladakh and its future, called off the hunger strike after discussions and assurances from authorities regarding the concerns raised by the protesters.
The activist said the decision to end the fast was taken after receiving a positive response from the government, while maintaining that the larger movement would continue through democratic and peaceful means.
The Climate Justice Party has announced that its protest will continue until further progress is made on the issues being raised. Party members said they would continue their campaign to seek greater attention towards Ladakh’s concerns and aspirations.
Wangchuk’s fast had drawn attention from people across the country, with supporters calling for dialogue between the government and representatives of Ladakh. The protest highlighted demands related to environmental protection, constitutional safeguards and regional concerns.
Meanwhile, authorities have assured that discussions on the issues will continue, with both sides expected to remain engaged through dialogue and negotiations.
