Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said India’s energy demand is expected to grow 2.5 times by 2047, reflecting the country’s rapid economic expansion and rising energy needs.
Puri said India is increasingly shaping the global energy landscape and is currently the world’s third-largest consumer of energy and oil. He also highlighted India’s position as the third-largest refiner and fourth-largest LNG importer globally.
The Minister said the projected rise in energy demand could account for around 25 per cent of incremental global energy demand. He emphasised the importance of strengthening domestic capabilities, diversifying energy sources and developing strategic partnerships to meet the country’s future requirements.
Puri also highlighted the progress made in India’s transition towards cleaner energy. He said reforms over the past decade have helped strengthen the country’s energy security while accelerating efforts to adopt cleaner and more sustainable sources of energy.
The expected increase in energy demand is closely linked to India’s development ambitions and the goal of achieving a developed economy by 2047. Meeting this demand while ensuring affordability, energy security and a gradual transition towards cleaner sources is expected to remain a key priority in the coming years.
