Kathmandu, Nov 23: Experts have identified 42 glacial lakes in Nepal as being at high risk of bursting, raising concerns over potential floods and damage to downstream communities. The findings highlight the growing impact of climate change on Himalayan ecosystems.
According to recent assessments, all 42 lakes are located in Koshi Province, with several situated in Sankhuwasabha district. The Tallopokhari glacial lake in lower Barun has been classified as the most vulnerable, measuring approximately three kilometers in length and over 200 meters in depth.
Researchers noted that rising temperatures and accelerated glacier melt are increasing water volumes, putting pressure on fragile natural dams. A sudden collapse could trigger glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), threatening lives, infrastructure, and agricultural land.
Institutions including ICIMOD, Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, and UNDP Nepal have emphasized the need for early warning systems, disaster preparedness, and resilient infrastructure to mitigate risks.
The warning underscores Nepal’s vulnerability to climate-induced disasters and calls for urgent action to safeguard communities and strengthen regional cooperation in managing Himalayan water resources.
