UK Conservative Party MP Bob Blackman has raised serious concerns in the House of Commons over escalating violence against Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh. He highlighted reports of murders, arson attacks on homes and temples, and growing insecurity among minorities ahead of the country’s national elections scheduled for February 12, 2026.
The MP urged the UK government to press Bangladesh’s interim administration, led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, to ensure the protection of minorities and uphold democratic principles. He emphasized that free, fair, and inclusive elections are essential for the stability of Bangladesh and the safety of vulnerable communities.
Blackman noted that the Awami League, which enjoys significant public support, has been barred from contesting the elections, raising concerns about political exclusion and the rise of extremist forces seeking constitutional changes. He warned that unchecked violence and intimidation could undermine democratic processes and minority rights.
The intervention reflects growing international concern over the situation in Bangladesh, with calls for stronger diplomatic engagement to safeguard human rights and prevent further escalation of violence against minority groups.
