Colombo, Dec 02: Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews has expressed heartfelt gratitude to India for extending timely support as Cyclone Ditwah triggered severe flooding and large-scale destruction across several parts of Sri Lanka. Mathews, who took to social platforms to share the situation on the ground, said the assistance arriving from India had brought hope to communities struggling with the aftermath of the cyclone.
Mathews thanked the Government of India for activating rapid relief efforts under Operation Sagar Bandhu, noting that the deployment of emergency teams, essential supplies, and medical assistance has been a lifeline for many families affected by the disaster. He also appreciated the Indian Navy and humanitarian agencies for reaching some of the worst-hit neighbourhoods where access remained extremely difficult.
The senior cricketer emphasised that the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah has left thousands displaced and several regions submerged, with many people losing their homes, belongings, and means of livelihood. He urged the public to come together in solidarity and support ongoing rescue and relief work.
Officials in Colombo have also acknowledged India’s prompt response, stating that coordination between both countries has helped expedite aid delivery to northern and eastern districts facing the brunt of the cyclone’s impact.
Mathews concluded by saying that the compassion shown by India during Sri Lanka’s moment of crisis will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude, adding that continued support will be crucial as the nation begins rebuilding efforts in the days ahead.
