BJP candidate Debangshu Panda has won the Falta Assembly seat in West Bengal by a decisive margin of 1,09,021 votes, marking a historic breakthrough in a constituency long dominated by the Trinamool Congress.
Panda secured 1,49,666 votes, while CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi finished second with 40,645 votes. Congress candidate Abdur Razzak Molla polled 10,084 votes, and TMC’s Jahangir Khan, who withdrew from the contest before repolling, slipped to fourth place with 7,783 votes.
The Election Commission had ordered a repoll across all 285 booths in Falta following allegations of EVM tampering and irregularities during the April 29 polling. Over 87 percent voter turnout was recorded in the repoll, conducted under heavy security with 35 companies of central forces deployed.
This victory adds to the BJP’s historic tally of 208 seats in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, ending TMC’s dominance in South 24 Parganas. Falta, part of Diamond Harbour represented by TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, now stands as a symbolic gain for the BJP in the heart of the ruling party’s bastion.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Debangshu Panda, calling the result a testament to democracy prevailing over intimidation. The massive margin of victory underscores strong voter confidence in the BJP and signals a major setback for the Trinamool Congress in its traditional stronghold.
