New Delhi, Dec 02: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Shafat Ahmed Shangloo, an absconder wanted in a 35-year-old case, bringing closure to one of the agency’s longest pending investigations. Shangloo, who had evaded law enforcement for decades, was apprehended in Srinagar following a coordinated operation.
CBI officials confirmed that Shangloo was wanted in connection with a financial fraud case registered in 1990. Despite repeated summons and warrants, he remained untraceable for years, earning the status of a proclaimed offender. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the agency’s efforts to track long-term fugitives.
CBI spokesperson R.C. Joshi said, “This arrest demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that no offender escapes justice, regardless of the time elapsed. Shangloo will now face trial in accordance with the law.”
Investigators revealed that Shangloo had been living under assumed identities and frequently shifting locations to avoid detection. His capture was made possible through intelligence inputs and close coordination with local police in Jammu and Kashmir.
Legal experts, including senior advocate Anil Sethi, noted that the arrest underscores the importance of accountability in financial crimes. “Even after decades, the law catches up. This case will serve as a reminder that absconders cannot remain beyond the reach of justice,” he said.
Officials added that Shangloo has been produced before a special CBI court in Delhi, which has remanded him to custody for further interrogation. The agency is now working to recover evidence and trace assets linked to the original case.
