The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for biennial elections to 16 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. The polls will be held to fill vacancies arising from the retirement of sitting members, ensuring continuity in the state’s upper house.
According to the notification, the elections will be conducted in June 2026, with the model code of conduct coming into effect immediately. The process includes filing of nominations, scrutiny, withdrawal of candidature, polling, and counting of votes. The newly elected members will serve a six-year term.
The Legislative Council, being the upper chamber of the Maharashtra legislature, plays a crucial role in reviewing bills passed by the Assembly and providing checks and balances in governance. Political parties are expected to field candidates strategically, given the importance of these seats in shaping legislative debates and policy decisions.
