Richmond, Virginia, November 5, 2025 — India-born Democrat Ghazala Hashmi has made history by being elected as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, becoming the first South Asian American and first Muslim woman to hold the position in the state’s history.
Hashmi, a former state senator and educator, won the race with a decisive margin, campaigning on a platform of inclusive governance, education reform, and healthcare access. Her victory marks a significant milestone for immigrant representation in American politics.
In her victory speech, Hashmi thanked voters for embracing diversity and progress, stating, “This win is not just mine — it belongs to every community that has felt unseen and unheard.”
Born in Hyderabad, India, Hashmi moved to the United States as a child and built her career in academia before entering public service. Her ascent to statewide office reflects the growing influence of South Asian Americans in U.S. political leadership.
She will assume office in January 2026, joining a new wave of leaders committed to equity, education, and civic engagement across Virginia.
