Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has said that India is on its way to becoming one of the top five global maritime powers. Speaking on the occasion of National Maritime Day, the minister highlighted the government’s initiatives to strengthen the country’s maritime infrastructure and enhance its global standing in the sector.
Sonowal emphasized that India’s maritime sector plays a crucial role in driving economic growth, boosting international trade, and supporting the nation’s strategic interests. He noted that ongoing investments in port modernization, shipping reforms, and coastal connectivity are positioning India as a rising maritime force.
The minister pointed out that the government’s focus on sustainability, digitalization, and capacity expansion will further accelerate India’s progress in the global maritime domain. He added that the sector’s transformation is aligned with the vision of making India a developed nation by 2047.
National Maritime Day, observed annually on April 5, commemorates India’s rich maritime heritage and recognizes the contributions of maritime personnel. Sonowal’s remarks underscored the importance of the sector in shaping India’s future as a global economic and strategic power.
He reiterated that with continued reforms and investments, India is steadily advancing toward its goal of joining the league of the world’s top five maritime powers, strengthening both its economy and global influence.
