An Iranian drone and missile strike hit Kuwait International Airport’s Terminal 1 on Wednesday, causing severe damage and forcing suspension of all flights. At least one person was killed and 63 others injured, including foreign nationals. The attack ignited fires, damaged passenger facilities, and disrupted regional air connectivity.
Authorities confirmed that the strike was part of Iran’s retaliation against recent U.S. military actions in the Gulf. Alongside Kuwait Airport, Iran also targeted Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait and Isa Air Base in Bahrain. While military defenses intercepted some drones, the civilian terminal suffered direct hits.
Kuwait’s government condemned the attack as a violation of sovereignty and expelled two Iranian diplomats. The incident has raised fears of wider escalation in the Gulf, undermining the fragile ceasefire agreed between Iran and the U.S. in April.
Casualties included head injuries, fractures, and amputations, with hospitals in Kuwait City overwhelmed by the influx of victims. Aviation authorities diverted flights to neighboring airports, while partial operations resumed later in the day after emergency repairs.
The strike marks one of the most serious escalations in recent months, highlighting the vulnerability of civilian infrastructure amid regional tensions.
