Mehbooba Mufti, president of the PDP, has urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to provide government jobs to the children of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi of Beerwah, Budgam, who was martyred in the line of duty.
On July 29, 2026, she personally visited his family to offer condolences, stressing that a martyr’s sacrifice must be honoured not only with tributes but also by ensuring the welfare and dignity of his loved ones.
During her Beerwah visit, Mehbooba also interacted with flood-affected traders, demanding that the government hand over vacant Municipal Building space for shopkeepers’ storage and identify land for a new commercial complex. She emphasized that relief measures must restore livelihoods rather than remain limited to announcements.
Her appeal highlights two pressing issues in Budgam: the welfare of martyrs’ families and rehabilitation of disaster-hit communities. Politically, it also ties into the broader debate in J&K about government employment, transparency, and alleged backdoor appointments.
This demand, if accepted, could set a precedent for direct government job allotments to children of martyred personnel, while also reinforcing PDP’s narrative of standing with both emotional and economic concerns of local communities.
