New Delhi: The Press Club of India (PCI) has strongly condemned the alleged “manhandling” of United News of India (UNI) journalists by Delhi Police and CRPF personnel during the sealing of UNI’s Rafi Marg premises on Friday evening.
The sealing followed a Delhi High Court order cancelling UNI’s land allotment. Journalists, including women employees, were reportedly forced out of the office and denied access to personal belongings, sparking outrage among media bodies.
In its statement, the PCI described the action as “unacceptable” and “highhanded,” stressing that the right to work is a constitutional guarantee. It urged authorities to exercise restraint and respect press freedom.
The Editors Guild of India (EGI) and the Indian Women’s Press Corps (IWPC) also condemned the incident, highlighting the excessive force used and the treatment of women journalists. They called for accountability and protection of media rights.
The incident has raised serious concerns about shrinking space for independent journalism and the misuse of state machinery, with UNI staff abruptly displaced and operations disrupted.
