New Delhi, November 3, 2025 — Despite growing awareness about stroke prevention and treatment, many misconceptions continue to circulate among the public, according to leading neurologists. These myths can delay critical care and worsen outcomes for stroke patients.
One common myth is that strokes only affect the elderly. Experts clarify that strokes can strike at any age, especially with rising lifestyle-related risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and smoking. Another misconception is that strokes are always painful — in reality, many strokes are painless but still life-threatening.
Dr. Ramesh Gupta, a senior neurologist at AIIMS, emphasized the importance of recognizing early warning signs such as sudden numbness, confusion, trouble speaking, or loss of balance. “Time is brain. Every minute counts when it comes to stroke treatment,” he said.
Additionally, some believe that recovery from stroke is impossible. While strokes can cause lasting damage, timely medical intervention and rehabilitation can significantly improve outcomes and quality of life.
Healthcare professionals urge the public to rely on verified medical sources and consult specialists when in doubt. Public education campaigns are being planned to dispel myths and promote stroke literacy nationwide.
