The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution calling on Iran to immediately halt its attacks on Gulf countries, warning that the escalation poses a serious threat to regional and international peace and security.
The resolution condemns missile and drone strikes targeting several Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman, and urges Iran to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbours.
It also raises concern over threats to maritime navigation, particularly in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas supplies, calling for the protection of commercial shipping and freedom of navigation.
The measure was adopted with a strong majority, though some permanent members abstained, allowing the resolution to pass without a veto. Supporters described the vote as a clear international message against further escalation in the Gulf.
Iran rejected the resolution, calling it politically motivated and unbalanced, while Gulf states welcomed the decision, saying it reinforces international law and their right to security amid rising regional tensions.
