Health authorities in West Bengal have reported two suspected cases of Nipah virus infection, prompting immediate action from the central government. The patients, currently under observation, have been admitted to a specialized facility for testing and treatment.
In response, the Union Health Ministry has dispatched a multidisciplinary team to the state to assist local officials in containment measures, contact tracing, and sample collection. The team includes experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Officials emphasized that precautionary steps are being taken to prevent any potential spread, including isolation of suspected cases, enhanced surveillance in affected districts, and awareness campaigns for healthcare workers and the public.
The Nipah virus, a zoonotic pathogen transmitted from animals to humans, has previously caused outbreaks in Kerala and other regions. Authorities have urged citizens not to panic and to follow health advisories, while laboratory confirmation of the suspected cases is awaited.
